Severstal Metiz Presents Unique Product Solutions at the International Railway Exhibition

Reinforced-concrete sleepers with a fastening kit designed to handle heavy loads were honored with an award at the Metal Expo exhibition in 2024. The sleepers offer high strength which allows them to carry loads of up to 55 tons per an axle of flat wagons. The fastening kit consumes a small amount of metal in production and offers exceptional durability and reliability. It requires no maintenance while allowing the adjustment of the track gauge. The service life of the sleepers is up to 50 years or 1.5 billion tons of freight. For narrow-gauge tracks (with a gauge ranging 650 to 750 mm), specialists from Severstal-metiz, in col-laboration with its partners, have developed new types of sleepers with reinforcing elements and a fas-tening system with screw spikes and dowels. It provides rigid fixation of the track gauge and high creep resistance. The fastening system is easy to install and maintain and, in addition, features a protective coat-ing suitable for various harsh environments. Such fastenings have already been successfully implemented on the tracks carrying significant axial loads at steel plants and in mine workings. At the exhibition, Severstal-metiz also presented the results of its activities aimed to improve the mechani-cal properties of its fasteners. Such fasteners show an enhanced load-bearing capacity during service. The use of these products increases the maximum guaranteed service life of rail joints and reduces repair and maintenance costs. "It is Severstal-metiz’s debut at the International Railway Exhibition. We are very pleased to present our developments, which address modern challenges and successfully replace imported solutions. I would like to emphasize that all of Severstal-metiz’s products passed all necessary tests, were trialed on operating track sections of various types, and proved to comply to all railway safety regulations and standards. We are currently working on a number of product solutions that will help to secure the industrial independence and sovereignty of our country," said Sergei Kovryakov, the CEO of Severstal-metiz. Furthermore, Severstal’s comprehensive offering includes materials and advanced innovations for rolling stock manufacturing that can significantly increase the transit capacity of the Russian railway infrastruc-ture, namely, GOST 5520 09G2S steel designed for tank wagon bodies with a guaranteed yield stress of at least 375 MPa, which remains even after the post-weld heat treatment; heat-treatable Powerbase steel for parts used in severe abrasive environments; and high-strength steels such as Powerform and 09G2SFB, able to reduce the weight of rolling stock parts by 4-17% and lower their production cost by 3-8%. Other novelties developed by Severstal’s experts in the development of new products and prospective engineering include open and closed containers for transporting coiled steel, which cut freight costs by up to 3% compared to specialized wagons and increase the wagon payload by 500 kg; hopper doors and hatch lids lightened by 15 %, having a reinforced framework and flat siding improving the design efficiency and reducing production and operating costs by up to 7%; and also high-strength steel profiles for load-bearing elements, siding and frame beams, which enable a reduction in the weight of the structures by 6-12% without compromising their load capacity.
