Severstal Metiz Manufactured and Supplied Stay Cable System for the Academician Korolev Bridge
Severstal-metiz has manufactured and supplied a stay cable system for the Academician Korolev Bridge located at Beregovoy Proezd in Moscow.
The bridge features an arch design. Its 315-meter span supported by metal arches is fixed with 44 stay cables, each one fitted with end connections securely attaching the cable to the structure.
The stay cables were produced by at the Volgograd site of Severstal Wire Ropes. 78-mm fully-locked coil ropes made from galvanized steel wire was used for this project. Their outer layer consists of Z-wires. These ropes have a denser and more robust structure and longer service life, compared those of a conventional design. Z-wires prevent moisture from penetrating into the core and extend the service life of the stay cable significantly. For extra protection against moisture and harsh environments, the rope is plastic-coated. The coating enhances the appearance of the rope and allows it to blend seamless with the design of the bridge. The total length of the wire ropes used as stay cables in the bridge exceeds 560 meters.
The cable-stayed system was assembled by specialists of the Volgograd branch of Severstal Lifting Technologies, who cut the ropes to required lengths, pre-stretched them, and installed end connections.
The project design and on-site installation supervision were also conducted by specialists from Severstal-metiz. The scope of the project included the supervision throughout the entire on-site installation process, as well as rope tensioning, and measurement of the internal forces.
"It is not the first time the Severstal-metiz companies have been involved in the construction of a critical infrastructure facility. For this project, we have designed a tailored solution taking into account the local terrain and intensity of the pedestrian and vehicular traffic. Our integrated approach involved not only the manufacturing of the components but also the professional expertise and technical support throughout the entire installation process, and it allowed us to skillfully assemble the structures and adhere to the technical regulations and construction schedule,” said Sergei Kovryakov, the CEO of Severstal-metiz.
